Women's World Cup 2025: No Shafali Verma as BCCI names 15-member squad

After the Asia Cup squad announcement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced a 15-member squad for the Women's World Cup 2025 event. The India Women's team will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur, with Smriti Mandhana to be deputy for the showpiece event. One of the biggest names to miss from the squad is opening batter Shafali Verma. The youngster was overlook for the tournament, owing to Pratika Rawal cementing the place at the top alongside Mandhana.

In the limited opportunities that Rawal has got, she has shown exemplary form, scoring over 500 runs in just below 10 games she has played. Apart from the runs, the right-hand batter also offers solidarity at the top. Her temperament & and the partnership with Mandhana was the clincher for the selectors. Speaking about the rest of the batters, Jemimah Rodrigues, Harleen Deol, Richa Ghosh & Deepti Sharma were no-brainier picks. All four players have shown great consistency in the 50-over format leading up to the World Cup.

Deepti, in fact, has been in the top five list of all-rounders for a long time. The southpaw has also excelled in the finisher role alongside Richa.

Renuka Thakur to lead the bowling attack; Yastika Bhatia named as second keeper

In the bowling, pacer Renuka Thakur will lead the bowling attack, which also sees Arundhati Reddy, Kranti Gaud, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, and Sneh Rana in the team. As expected, India's squad is heavily spin-favored, with Radha, Rana, Deepti & Charani being the lead spinners. Harleen, as well as Harman & Rodrigues, can also roll their arm over. Yastika Bhatia has been named as the second keeper-batter in the squad.

The WCW 2025 will begin on September 30, as hosts India open their campaign against Sri Lanka. The showpiece event will be played across five venues in India & Sri Lanka (Pakistan will play all their matches in Colombo).
