Navjot Singh Sidhu, known for his forthright opinions, expressed concerns over the timing of Virat Kohli’s reported Test retirement decision, particularly with India gearing up for a challenging Test tour of England.
The cricketing world is abuzz with speculation following reports that Kohli, one of India’s greatest Test batters, has informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) of his intention to retire from Test cricket. Though the BCCI has urged him to reconsider, citing the importance of his experience for the England series, starting June 20
Notably, the news, first reported by The Indian Express, comes just days after former captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format, marking an end to an era for Indian cricket.

Navjot Singh Sidhu’s Questions Timing of Virat Kohli's Likely Test Retirement
Sidhu, known for his outspoken commentary, addressed the reports of Virat Kohli’s Test retirement. He weighed in on the matter, expressing concerns about the timing of Kohli’s decision.
His comments have added fuel to the ongoing discussions about the future of Indian cricket, especially in the wake of Rohit’s departure from the format.
"Virat Kohli’s decision — that he wants to retire — has created a stir across the cricketing world. His intention is right, his motive is noble — that “the old order must change, yielding place to the new.” But the timing and occasion are not appropriate, because the pride and prestige of India are on the line," Sidhu said as quoted in a video.
Sidhu elaborated on the significance of the upcoming England tour, describing it as a formidable challenge for any Test-playing nation. He emphasized Kohli’s pivotal role in the squad, particularly given his vast experience in English conditions.
"We are heading into a tour that is the toughest litmus test even for other Test-playing nations. Why do I say that Kohli can be our “knight in shining armour” in England? Because he has the experience, especially after Rohit Sharma’s departure. You can’t send an inexperienced side to England," he added.
No Confirmation Yet on Virat Kohli's Test Retirement Reports
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has yet to officially confirm Kohli’s retirement plans, and the player himself has remained tight-lipped on the matter. However, speculation has been rife since reports emerged suggesting that Kohli, now 36, is contemplating stepping away from the longest format.
Kohli’s reported decision follows a lean patch in Test cricket, particularly during the recent Australia tour, where he scored 190 runs across five Tests at an average of 23.75, despite a century in Perth.
The England series, the start of the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle for India, is very crucial. With Shubman Gill emerging as the frontrunner to replace Rohit as captain, the team faces a transitional phase, making Kohli’s experience invaluable.
