In a massive development, India's Test skipper Shubman Gill is all set to be named vice-captain to Suryakumar Yadav in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 event. The 25-year-old, who was the vice-captain for Rohit Sharma in the Champions Trophy 2025 event, is also set to take over ODI captaincy from the veteran batter.
According to a report in RevSportz, Gill, who last featured for India in a T20I game in July 2024, will be part of the Continental Cup, starting from September 09 to 28. Notably, several reports said that the right-hand batter will be rested for the Asia Cup due to workload issues. However, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection panel wants India's Test skipper to feature in the Continental Cup, a reward for his terrific performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season for the Gujarat Titans (GT), in which he scored 650 runs in 15 innings, averaging 50.

BCCI also plans to give Shubman Gill ODI captaincy ahead of the World Cup 2027 tournament. The selectors want to give the 25-year-old sufficient time to get used to ODI captaincy before the showpiece event kicks off. Currently, Rohit is the ODI captain; however, the selection panel wants to phase him and Virat Kohli ahead of the WC.

The report did not mention when the BCCI will hand over ODI leadership to Gill in the coming years, but it is certain that India's Test skipper is set to succeed Rohit as ODI skipper. Notably, BCCI has asked Rohit and Kohli to retire from ODI cricket after the three-match ODI series against Australia, starting on October 19.
