After being snubbed from the Asia Cup 2025 squad, there are reports that Shreyas Iyer is likely to replace Rohit Sharma as the next ODI skipper for India.

Despite having good numbers in white-ball cricket in recent times and impressive record as captain in the IPL, Iyer was snubbed from the Asia Cup squad. The team management decided to include Tilak Varma ahead of him.

Shreyas Iyer played a key role in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, scoring 530 runs in 11 matches at an average of 66.25. He also played a key role in India’s victorious Champions Trophy campaign emerging as the highest run-getter for India with 243 runs in five matches, averaging close to 50. He was the second-highest run-getter overall in the tournament.

Shubman Gill Potential T20I Captain In Future, Shreyas Iyer In Consideration For ODIs

Meanwhile, as per recent reports in Dainik Jagaran, the BCCI is thinking about him as an option to replace Rohit Sharma as the next ODI skipper. Sources close to the BCCI told the publication that the board is seriously considering potential candidates who can replace Rohit as the next ODI captain and Shreyas has emerged as the frontrunner. If selected, Iyer is likely to lead the team in the next ODI World Cup as well. A BCCI source also clarified the BCCI's thought process on Shubman Gill's captaincy future.

“The decision (to make Gill as ODI vice-captain for Champions Trophy 2025) was taken based on the situation at that time. At this time, there is so much cricket happening that it will be impossible for one player to captain the side in all three formats. Hence, Gill has been given Test captaincy and has been named T20I vice-captain and is being seen as the future T20I captain,” the source said.

Iyer has played 70 ODIs and has scored close to 3000 runs, averaging 48.22 with five centuries. His performances in the last two 50-over tournaments for India has been one of the key reasons behind the BCCI leaning towards him as an option.

Iyer's Captaincy Credentials

While Iyer has never led the Indian team in any format, he has good experience of leading Mumbai in domestic cricket. He led the side in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025, scoring 325 runs from 5 matches. He also led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy in 2024, besides leading KKR to IPL title in 2024 and Punjab Kings to the final in IPL 2025, as said earlier.
