“No Ties with Pakistan Until Terrorism Ends” - Gautam Gambhir Shuts Down India-Pakistan Cricket Talks

Gautam Gambhir Shuts Down India-Pakistan Cricket Talks

In a resolute stand against resuming cricketing relations with Pakistan, Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, cited ongoing terrorism as a non-negotiable barrier, particularly in light of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 civilian lives, mostly tourists, in the Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir.

Gambhir’s remarks come at a time when discussions about potential matches in tournaments like the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup have resurfaced, prompting him to emphasize national security and the sanctity of Indian lives over sporting engagements.

"My personal answer to this is absolutely no. Till all this (Terrorism) doesn't stop, there should not be anything between India and Pakistan," Gambhir said as quoted to ABP news.

Gautam Gambhir’s Stand on India-Pakistan Cricket Ties

Elaborating on his position, Gautam Gambhir highlighted the irreplaceable value of human life.

"Ultimately, this is government's decision whether we play them or not. I have said this before also, no cricket match or Bollywood or any other interaction is more important than the life of Indian soldiers and Indian citizens. Matches will keep happening, movies will be made, singers will continue to perform, but nothing comes close to losing a loved one in your family,” he added.

With the Indian government adopting stringent measures against Pakistan, there have been rumours that the Indian cricket team will not play against Pakistan even in the ICC events.

When asked about the possibility of India facing Pakistan in upcoming tournaments like the Asia Cup later this year or the next T20 World Cup, Gambhir made it clear that the decision lies beyond his purview.

"This is not up to me, it's not in my jurisdiction, this is for BCCI and more importantly, the government to decide whether we should play them or not. Whatever decision they make, we should be absolutely fine with it and not politicise it," Gambhir concluded.

In response to the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, conducting precision strikes on nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK). The operation, involving the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, targeted terrorist infrastructure in locations like Bahawalpur and Muridke.
